I couldn’t find a calendar that I wanted to buy this year, so I made my own on Snapfish using portraits of DC Comics women by Darwyn Cooke. I think it turned out really well. Here are ten of my choices. Catwoman and Batgirl are in the calender too, but tumblr won’t let me have a photo set over 10 pictures.
I pulled all these images from comicartfans.com, an awesome resource for projects like this. I think the extra money spent will be well worth it for me to get to look up from my desk every day of this year and see some of my favorite characters drawn by my favorite comic book artist.
Both Batwomen are in this month’s Batman, Inc. Here are both as drawn by Darwyn Cooke
Darwyn draws such amazing women. Two of my favorites in one post.

This was done to a proposed followed up to the New Frontier that for some reason didn’t get done.
Want to see more of this project right now.

Someone just pointed me towards this video of Darwyn Cooke at Fan Expo and some of things he had to say … and, well, it’s making me break my no posting vacation. It’s a litany of what he wants to see DC and Marvel change. I absolutely agree with the premise that comics must “stop catering to the perverted needs of 45 year old men.” But here’s what else he doesn’t like to see:
- Batman fucking Black Canary
- Batman swearing
- (Batman) Feeding a boy rats
Okay, he doesn’t like All Star Batman and Robin. There’s a lot of people who don’t.
But he continues:
- “Characters raped in the ass”
- “Characters that have been straight for over 60 years becoming lesbians because the writer is either too stupid or uncreative to come up with something decent”
Okay, he had me. He really had me. But that last line? “something decent?” Perhaps he was rattling stuff off and wasn’t thinking. Maybe he’s unhappy with Batwoman (the character I assume he referring too), but it doesn’t matter. I understand what he’s saying, no character should change overnight. But he could have said, “turning a character into … a murderer, a serial killer, a robot, a martian, etc.” But he didn’t.
Lumping changing a character into a lesbian with the rest of the list is just wrong and, frankly, disconcerting. I am a huge fan of Cooke. But today I am very disappointed fan.
Agreed. Big fan of Cooke, very difficult to hear him feel this way in a public forum.

Batman Beyond (1999) opening.
Darwyn Cooke designed this opening. Absolutely stunning broken down like this, right?
