Domo-Arigato Mr. Roboto - Polysics
Energy-dome wearing robots can be such DICKS!
I’m being self indulgent today - It’s my 30th birthday, so I deserve it. I’m taking everyone through a journey of some of my biggest obsessions, from when I was literally a baby up to the present.
Name of Obsession: Godzilla
Length of Obsession: 6-26yrs
Why: There is nothing a six year old likes more than seeing a guy in an awesome costume destroy a miniature city. I remember going on trips to Arizona with my family for spring break and being able to buy three Godzilla VHS tapes (all three would cost $27!) to bring back to Calgary with me. Then I’d have “Godzilla-Fests” with my two best elementary school friends, Daniel S. and Daniel K.
I love the tangible feel of the early Godzilla movies. The fact that it is easy to tell how the special effects are done (they were not realistic looking, even for the time) makes them even more evocative, in my opinion.
As I got older, I appreciated the heavy doses of social commentary that one gets in these movies. I remember defending the Godzilla movies in my late teens because they contained anti-nuclear and pro-environment messages. But really, I just loved watching giant monsters smash stuff.
The 28-film series (and spinoffs) has gone through a lot of ups and downs. The mid-nineties produced a terrible series of molasses-paced updates of the originals. But, when I reached my twenties, the series had an imaginative renaissance, resulting in two of my favorite entries: 2000’s Godzilla X Megaguirus and 2001’s GMK: Giant Monsters All Out Attack.
Godzilla met his end in 2004’s unwatchable Godzilla: Final Wars, but if Toho decides to bring my old friend back, I hope that I can rekindle this obsession into other stages of my life.
